The text presented here is a sample of the typical Catholic wedding ceremony Inside of Mass. Couples have options as to prayers, readings, vows and blessings and inclusion of ceremonies of other traditions. Please consult with your priest or deacon to further customize the ceremony.

GREETING AND PRAYER

O. Friends, we are gathered here today to witness the marriage of N. and N. Let us call upon God to be with us today as we celebrate this union of two into one. In the name of the Father, + the Son and the Holy Spirit.

OPENING PRAYER

PRAYER A

O. Almighty God, hear our prayers for N. and N. who have come here today to be united in the sacrament of marriage. Increase their faith in you and in each other, and through them bless your church. Make their love fruitful so that they may be living witnesses to your divine love in the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

PRAYER B

O. Almighty God, hear our prayers for N. and N., who have come before your altar to be united in the sacrament of marriage. Give them your blessing and strengthen their love for each other. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Usually the couple selects five readings, one each: an Old Testament reading, a Responsorial Psalm, a New Testament reading, an Alleluia verse and a Gospel reading. If there is a singer, the Responsorial Psalm and Alleluia verse may be sung. Family and friends may be selected to proclaim the readings, excluding the Gospel which is usually proclaimed by the priest or deacon.

Officiant may ask, depending upon location, everyone to stand, or the Bride and Groom stand, if seated. The Officiant addresses the Bride and Groom in one of these ways:

CONSENT FORM A

O. N. and N., you have come together here today so that the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of the Church's minister and this community. Christ abundantly blesses this love. He has already consecrated you in baptism and now enriches and strengthens you by a special sacrament so that you may assume the duties of marriage in mutual and lasting fidelity. And so, in the presence of the church here present, I ask you to state your intentions.

N. and N., have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?

Will you love and honor each other as husband and wife for the rest of your lives?

Will you accept children lovingly from God and bring them up according to the Law of Love and Compassion?

Since it is your intention to enter into marriage, with your hands joined and declare your consent before God and his Church, this community of your family and friends.

CONSENT FORM B

O. N. and N., you have come together here today so that the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of the Church's minister and this community of your family and friends. If you will be writing your own vows, please provide a copy to the priest at least one week prior to the wedding for inclusion in his materials. In that way he can make your wedding ceremony work seamlessly.

O. Lord, bless these rings which we bless + in your name. Grant that those who wear them may always do you will and live together in peace and compassion. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

RING BLESSING FORM B

O. Lord, bless + and consecrate N. and N. in their love and compassion for each other. May these rings be a symbol of true faith they share in each other and always remind them of their love and compassion. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The bridegroom places his wife's ring on her finger. He may say:

Unity Candle Mother (Groom) and Mother (Bride) may come forward to altar and light a small candle each from altar candle or with assistance of Best Man. Mothers turn and gave candle to B & G. Wishing Stone (see optional ceremonies) (couple holds a wishing stone with their names and wedding date while attendees hold small stone which they deposit in a glass jar at the end of the ceremony with their best wishes. Two options are offered.)

Unity Sand Ceremony (see optional ceremonies) (couple pours two different color containers of sand into a third container. Can include children in blended families.)

Unity Cross (see optional ceremonies) (couple puts together and inner and outer cross symbolizing an inner and outer life of sacrifice hel together by the pegs signifying faith, hope and charity that binds all together

O. Dear friends, we have witnessed the exchange of promises by N. and N.. Let us ask the Lord to strengthen their love for each other.

O. For N. and N., as they begin their married life together, may they always know Your presence in good times and in bad. Let us pray to the Lord.

May N. and N. celebrate the joy of your Presence in their hearts and home, with each other, their family and friends, and with whomever they meet. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

The bread and wine used in the Eucharist may be brought forward by the couple, members of their family or others as designated.

O. Blessed are you Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.
P. Blessed be God forever.

O. By the mixing of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

O. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.

O. Lord God, please accept this sacrifice which we offer you with humble and contrite hearts.

O. Pray Friends, that our Eucharist may be acceptable to God our Almighty and Loving Father.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

O. Lord, accept our offering for this new married couple, N. and N. By your love and providence you have brought them together; now bless them all the days of their married life. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

PRAYER B

O. Lord, accept the gifts we offer you on this happy day. In your fatherly love and compassion watch over and protect N. and N. whom you have united in marriage. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

O. The Lord be with you.

O. Lift up your hearts.
P. We lift them up to the Lord.

O. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
P. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

O. Father, all powerful and ever living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks.

You created us in love to share your divine life. We see our high destiny in the love of husband and wife, which bears the imprint of your own divine love.

Love is our origin, love is our constant calling, love is our fulfillment in heaven.

The love of man and woman is made holy in the sacrament of marriage and becomes the mirror of your everlasting love. Through Christ the choirs of angels and all the saints praise and worship your glory. May our voices blend with theirs as we join in their unending hymn:

P. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

O. Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body + and blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ.

Before he was given up to death, a death he freely accepted, he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you.

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again, he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples and said: Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this is in memory of me.

O. Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith.

P. Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again.

O. In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.

Lord, remember your church throughout the world; make us grow in love together with N, our bishop, with the patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, Jerusalem and Rome, me your most unworthy servant and with all the bishops, priests and deacons you have called to service.

Remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again; bring them and all the departed into the light of your presence. Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, the virgin Mother of God, with the apostles, and all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ.

For it is through Him and with Him and in Him in the unity of the Holy Spirit that all glory and honor is yours Almighty Father, forever and ever.

O. Let us pray together in the words Jesus gave us.

P. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The priest extends his hands inviting all in attendance to join and continues with a Nuptial Blessing People may remain standing for the Nuptial Blessings.

NUPTIAL BLESSING A

O. My dear friends, let us turn to the Lord and pray that he will bless with his grace this woman N. now married in Christ to this man N. and that he will unite in love the couple he has joined in this holy bond.

Father, by your plan man and woman are united, and married life has been established as the one blessing that was not forfeited by original sin or washed away in the flood.

Look with love upon this woman, your daughter, now joined to her husband in marriage. She asks your blessing. Give her the grace of love and peace. May she always follow the example of the holy women whose praises are sung in the scriptures.

May her husband put his trust in her and recognize that she is his equal and the heir with him to the life of grace. May he always honor her and love her as Christ loves his bride, the Church.

Father, keep them always true to your commandments. Keep them faithful in marriage and let them be living examples of Christian life. Give them the strength which comes from the gospel so that they may be witnesses of Christ to others. (Bless them with children and help them be good parents. May they live to see their children's children.) And, after a happy old age, grant them fullness of life with the saints in the kingdom of heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

NUPTIAL BLESSING B

O. Let us pray to the Lord for N. and N. who come here at the beginning of their married life so that they may always be united in love for each other.

Holy Father, you created humankind in your own image and made man and woman to be joined as husband and wife in union of body and heart and so fulfill their mission in this world.

Lord, grant that as they begin to live this sacrament they may share with each other the gifts of your love and become one in heart and mind as witnesses to your presence in their marriage. Help them to create a home together (and give them children to be formed by the gospel and to have a place in your family).

Give your blessing to N., your daughter, so that she may be a good wife (and mother), caring for the home, faithful in love for her husband, generous and kind.

Give your blessing to N., your son, so that he may be a good husband (and father), caring for the home, faithful in love for his wife, generous and kind.

Father, grant that as they come together to you table on earth, so that they may one day have the joy of sharing your feast in heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Family Blessing

(This may be added for the blended family with children from a prior marriage and created through this marriage.)

O. Let us pray for this new family created through the marriage of N. and N..

Father you created us in love and saved us in mercy and through the bond of marriage have established the family and willed that it should be a sign of your love for us. Shower your blessing on this new family created here today. Enable them, joined by one love, to create a home together and support one another. Make them responsive to the needs of others and witness to the faith in all they say and do. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

O. Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles: I leave you peace, my peace I give to you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith or your Church, and grant is the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live for ever and ever.

ROSES TO PARENTS (Optional)

Bride and Groom may each give a long stem, dethroned, non-red rose to respective mother-in-law, Groom presenting first to Bride's mother, then Bride to Groom's mother.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

In the early church liturgy was celebrated in different places each week. A piece of the Eucharistic bread from the previous Sunday was saved and commingled as a sign of unity with the other community. We invite all to remember their churches of origin and know that they are one in breaking of the bread.

O. May the mingling of the body and blood of Christ bring salvation to those who receive it.

Lord Jesus Christ, with faith in your love and mercy, we eat your body and drink your blood. May they not bring us condemnation but health in mind and body.

This is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are we who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

May the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ give eternal life to those who receive them.
